Online Reputation Management Strategy - 3

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a free Content Management System (CMS) which an be used for almost any online purpose, from regular blogs, portfolios and news sites to fully functional online stores. WordPress is an open-source platform, which makes it free for everyone. You can easily download, install, modify, extend and distribute it, even for commercial purposes.

Why WordPress?

There are plenty of CMSs you can go with. Common choices are Joomla and Drupal, yet the most popular platform on the Web (over 60 million sites) is WordPress and its share of the market keeps growing. Why? WordPress is the easiest CMS platform you can find.

Being simple, it still has huge customization possibilities. People sometimes get confused and give up on other CMS engines, but I can’t recall having a single client who thought WordPress was too hard for them. What makes WordPress popular is that it will work both for your small business niche website and for big corporation.

WordPress advantages:

Intuitive posting

In WordPress, you can add a new entry to your site with just two clicks. Click New-> Post from your front end and Publish the post when it’s ready. It doesn’t get easier than this.

Competition between developers

Since WordPress is the most popular site engine in the world, there are thousands of people writing content about it, creating extensions and themes for it, helping improve it significantly in each new update. It’s the most competitive platform for developers, which is a good thing for the end user, as there are ready-made solutions for almost anything you can think of.

Ease of access

As long as your hosting is up and running, you can access your admin panel at your-url-here.com/wp-admin and customize the site from any computer or mobile device with Internet access.

Dreamweaver vsWordPress

The days when the only way to put a page online was to create HTML, CSS and JS files, etc. are long gone. With WordPress, you do not need to know coding or hire a web developer. Its user-friendly admin panel allows you to work on your site while sitting in a boring meeting or a class. Everything is logical and to the point. Pages are edited in the Pages section, widgets in Widgets. I feel that even my toddler brother could do it if he could talk or write.

Analyse your content performance

An author needs an objective asset to see what their readers share and enjoy reading more and what - not so much. The sharing and commenting functionality lets you monitor users' engagement. And if you feel like some comment is inappropriate or spammy, you can trash or unapprove it. Nothing appears on your site without your blessing.

Online Reputation Management Strategy Part – 2

Online reputation management (ORM) is a strategy and process of monitoring, identifying, and influencing your digital reputation and credibility online. An effective online reputation management strategy can also provide you with new opportunities and insight on increasing your brand awareness.
There are many other reasons why it’s important to have an online reputation management process in place to help you with your social media and other digital marketing campaigns, but here are just a couple of reasons to consider getting one.

3. Show your best side

Current and potential investors, corporations, banks, and the general public are all going online to research your business before doing business with you. Look at investors as simply being consumers on a different level. These investors don’t know your company well enough and will often make decisions on the information that is available to them. Once again if you have a negative reputation online, it will show. Do you want to be associated with a business with a negative reputation?

4. Online insights

Gossip, speculation, and rumors have destroyed great names in the past and many businesses have lost the confidence of their target market due to this. Today it’s very common to see a celebrity or business with an associated scandal to simply vanish. Quite often this happens by an abundance of all the negative information floating around about them.

During a crisis online it is very common to have inside information available, but is often leaked to external sources before reaching all of the essential channels. Back in the day it was easy to remove the issues internally before they went out to the public. In today’s technology driven lifestyle with access to the social web in our pocket, news travels fast, especially if it’s negative. It can take seconds to collapse a brand that took years to build.

5. Recruitment

Having professional staff is the foundation for a successful workforce. The top individuals in every industry are forever head hunted and by knowing that, they will most likely research your company and look at all the facts concerning your brand before they accept any position at your company. If you know what your competitors, clients, and employees are talking about online, it can make a big difference in hiring someone with a good reputation.

Online reputation management is not a simple buzz word. It’s a reality and if you are not serious about protecting your reputation online, why are you still in business?

Online Reputation Management Strategy - 1

Online reputation management (ORM) is a strategy and process of monitoring, identifying, and influencing your digital reputation and credibility online. An effective online reputation management strategy can also provide you with new opportunities and insight on increasing your brand awareness.
If you are a business owner, I’m sure you know that having a good reputation is important for business growth. The same goes for your digital reputation, as most people in today’s digital business lifestyle go online when they have a problem or require information regarding a specific product or service. If your reputation is negative online, will these people looking for answers turn to you? At the end of the day, a bad reputation online will have a negative effect on your business objectives.

There are many other reasons why it’s important to have an online reputation management process in place to help you with your social media and other digital marketing campaigns, but here are just a couple of reasons to consider getting one.

1. Increase sales

Many people are researching brands, services, and products online before they make the final purchase decision. Do you know what they are looking for? If not, then you are already missing out. What difference do your marketing campaigns make if you are not sure what message is being received by the people you are trying to reach?

Most companies start to investigate when their sales start to drop. For some, regaining momentum is not worthwhile economically and the service or product is discontinued. What if you had valuable insights about what your target audience is looking for online? Would this change the game a bit?

2. Build trust and credibility

Having the trust of your clients is a major component of success. Your clients discuss their purchases with friends and when they have a problem they will most likely spread the word about their experience. The internet makes everyone a citizen journalist and you should now worry about negative content spreading like wildfire online. If your company suffers a loss of confidence in the public, there is a chance that you will never be able to turn it positive again. If you can recover from this negative publicity to regain trust from your target audience, the cost will be high in comparison with having a process in place that could have prevented it.

Shell Island was named for the abundance of shells found here, in the more heavily trafficked parts of the island shells are few and far between, keep your eye out for rare shells.

The west side of Shell Island is part of St. Andrews State Park, and divided by the St. Andrews Shipping Channel (known to locals as “the pass”). The east side of Shell Island is property of Tyndall Air Force Base.

In its history, Shell Island has seen Native American settlement, the arrival of Spanish explorers, and even pirates! More modern efforts at development have usually been quickly undone by hurricanes, including a zoo that was once located in what is now state park owned land.

Media Queries

Responsive web design is a relatively new approach to website design that ensures users have a good viewing experience no matter what type of device they’re using. It’s become increasingly important over the last few years as mobile device ownership has exploded and traditional PC sales have slowed. And now that Google is prioritizing mobile-friendly sites in its search results algorithm, it’s essential to make sure your site is optimized for mobile by using responsive design.

Responsive design allows your website to adapt to the device your users are viewing it on. It provides you with the capability to write once publish everywhere, meaning less work for you.

The reasons you should move across to responsive design continues to grow. It saves you time, it saves you money, and best of all enables your user to access your content the way they love.

Responsive design can be achieved in three simple steps. A flexible grid-based layout, enable flexible media, and finally the addition of media queries. Let's get started with some detailed instructions
Development Principles

Responsive web design consists of three development principles. To work properly, all three of these need to be implemented:
1.            Fluid grids
2.            Media queries
3.            Flexible images and media

Fluid Grids

A flexible grid-based layout is the cornerstone of responsive design. It uses relative sizing to fit the content to the device’s screen size. The term “grid” is a little misleading because it’s not necessary to implement any of the available grid frameworks. Instead, CSS is used to position the content. This approach is based on percentages and is a departure from traditional pixel-based design principles. Responsive design moves away from the pixel-based approach because a pixel on one device could be eight pixels on another device. By basing text size, widths, and margins on percentages, a fixed size can be turned into a size relative to its display space.

 Media Queries

Media queries, also known as breakpoints, can be used to apply different styles based on the capabilities of the device. The website detects the type of device you’re using or the size of your web browser and correctly displays the page. To see this in action, stretch the window of your web browser to different sizes. Notice how the page adjusts. Features can be used to control the width, height, max-width, max-height, device-height, orientation, aspect ratio, etc.

Flexible Images and Media

This feature allows you to adapt images and other media to load differently, depending on the device, either by scaling or using the CSS overflow property.

Scaling in CSS is relatively straightforward—the media element’s max width can be set at 100 percent, and the web browser will make the image shrink and expand depending on its container.
An alternative to scaling media is to crop it with CSS. Applying overflow:hidden allows images to be cropped dynamically so that they fit into their containers.

Basics of Online Reputation Management

Your reputation is everything. Consumers no longer blindly make purchases or wake up and decide to do business with you. They conduct careful research to find out who they are dealing with. If your online reputation is not in good shape, you could be missing out on a lot of business.

Create a Positive Reputation Before Anything Negative Happens

One way to manage your reputation is to make sure you have as much positive press as possible. When the internet is flooded with positive news stories about you, negative ones do not seem to matter as much. Many of them will be drowned out by the positive press while others will be disregarded by readers due to the abundance of encouraging news.

In order to build your positive reputation you need to claim all your online profiles. By this I mean you need to create a Facebook page, Twitter handle, Crunchbase profile, and more. You need to sign up with every website that allows you to create a profile. It is also recommended that you purchase your branded domain name.

Pushing Down Negative Content

One of the best ways to remove negative information is to push it down the search results. Things that wind up on page 2 of Google are rarely seen by those using the search engine. As such, you can effectively “remove” negative content simply by pushing it down Google pages.

The way to push negative content down is to outrank it with positive content. You will need to conduct media outreach in order to do so. Getting yourself mentioned and linked from high authority websites will help with the process. Simply find out the domain authority of the website you want to push down. Then, try to land featured articles in publications with a higher domain authority.

Online reputation management is synonymous with SEO. There are many SEO techniques to avoid and you need to keep this in mind when trying to push down negative content. Make sure to optimize content properly so that it will outrank the negative content you are trying to get rid of.

So basically there are two methods of online reputation. The first, and most important, is to have a positive reputation in the first place. The second is more of “reputation repair” in which you try to suppress negative content. Anyone with an online presence should be aware of these methods in order to maintain a positive perception and be able to rebuild if someone tries to disparage you.

Social Media Critical For Small Business

#1: Social Media Critical for Small Business

First, 96% of survey participants use social media marketing, and 92% of those agree or strongly agree with the phrase, “Social media marketing is important for my business.” Keep in mind that participants self-selected from a pool of over 300,000, and therefore are probably more interested in social media marketing than people who did not respond.

#2: Facebook Dominates Small Business Social Media Marketing

The majority of respondents carry out social media marketing on Facebook. The chart below shows that 93% use Facebook, ahead of Twitter at 79%. In the coming year, 62% of respondents plan to increase their use of Facebook for marketing purposes. Sixty-six percent will increase Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn activity.

#3: B2B Small Businesses Use Social Differently Than B2C

Breaking down Social Media Marketing Industry Report averages is useful. B2B respondents for this survey report that LinkedIn is their number-one choice for social networking.

B2C companies, on the other hand, go to Facebook first and in larger numbers. This makes sense because B2B businesses are looking for the marketing people, facilities managers, buyers and others who rely on LinkedIn for industry connections and news. Facebook is comprised of nearly every consumer on the planet.

#4: Most Small Business Marketers Don’t Know if Facebook Efforts Are Working

Despite the fact that 92% of small businesses agree that social media is important for their business AND that the majority use Facebook for their social media marketing, most also report that they don’t know whether their Facebook outreach is “working.”

“Working” may mean building brand awareness and relationships with customers. It could also mean bringing in more leads and sales. The bottom line is that the majority of small businesses either don’t know if Facebook achieves the goals they’ve set or it does NOT achieve those goals. It could also mean they have no goals or they haven’t bothered to measure their progress toward goals.
Shockingly, despite the high numbers using Facebook, just one in three self-employed respondents characterize Facebook efforts as “effective.”

#6: Most Small Businesses Spend 6 Hours or More Weekly on Social Media

Because of the crush of responsibilities they have, small business owners worry about the time it takes to keep an audience engaged on social channels. Tools like Hootsuite and Post Planner cut down on time spent, but social media marketing still requires significant time. These figures give small business owners and marketers a clear idea of the time competitors are investing.

#7: Small Businesses Identify Increased Exposure as Social’s Top Benefit

Even though “increased exposure” is more difficult to measure than a metric like traffic or bounce rate, marketers and small business owners rank it the number-one benefit of marketing on social media.

#8: Increased Traffic to Website Is Number-Two Benefit of Social Marketing

The chart above indicates that 77% of the survey’s nearly 4,000 respondents have appreciated the traffic that comes to their sites via social referral (clicking from Facebook or LinkedIn to the website for a blog post or landing page offer). Google Analytics and other tools make getting this data possible, even easy.

Improving Your Reputation is Your #1 Marketing Priority

Your number one marketing priority should be developing a 5-star online reputation. Why? All your other marketing efforts, whether they be online such as SEO, social media, PPC, or offline such as direct mail, magazines, radio, or TV, will ultimately lead the consumer to learn more about you online. There, your less than sterling or non-existent reputation drives them away.

Most business owners fail to realize is that what consumers want is information that will help them feel confident they’re making the best, most well-reasoned purchase. Today, quite a bit of that confidence comes in the form of online reviews reflecting others’ experiences.

Local Reviews and Reputation

When it comes to taking an active role in developing, building, and protecting your online reputation, you need to keep five points in mind:

1.            Range – While it might seem as though getting a few positive reviews on Google+ or Yelp is all that’s needed, we advocate a wide-ranging approach to online review management. Your business is too important to you and your loved ones to let its success be dictated by one or two companies with no vested interest.1

2.            Real – Make sure real client reviews are getting posted. It’s tempting to game the system and pen some glowing reviews, however, it’s not only unethical, you’ll undoubtedly get caught, and that can have some unintended consequences. Encourage your customers to be as specific as possible. A hallmark of fake reviews is vagueness.

3.            Recent – It appears that more recent reviews weigh more heavily by the search engines in terms of ranking. For this reason alone, creating a steady stream of new, positive reviews makes sense. Additionally, the fact that more recent reviews pack more powerful social proof with potential customers than older reviews, and you simply must put systems in place to continually gather reviews.

4.            Quantity – Ask yourself: If one dentist has 25 reviews with a 4-star average and the next best has one 5-star review, who are you going to call? Reliability is proven with consistency, particularly where reviews are concerned.

5.            Quality – This one is pretty obvious: The higher your reviews, the better your status will be – within reason. A business with nothing but 5-star ratings can look suspicious but, in general, the more favorable your reviews, the better.

While review and reputation building arguably may be the single most important online marketing tactic for local businesses in 2013 and beyond, the most successful businesses won’t stop there. Since reviews are most prominently displayed in conjunction with the hyper-local maps of search engines, they don’t generate many leads outside this area.

For the vast majority of businesses serving multiple cities from a single location, reviews should be just one building block in a larger reputation marketing strategy. That strategy should employ SEO to ensure the company’s website ranks near the top in all the cities they serve for their most important buying phrases. The good news is there’s a positive, synergistic relationship between a strong review presence, well-optimized local pages, and an authoritative website.

With the dominance mobile devices display in local purchasing, companies should make sure their websites not only rank highly, but are also mobile-friendly with click-to-call, click-to-map, and other navigable engagement features. You want to remove as much friction as possible between your customer’s need and his ability to contact you.

One Hidden – but Powerful – Benefit of Positive Reviews

Clearly, your business needs to put a review-gathering, reputation marketing culture, and process in place. The investment you make will return outsized profits from the new customers you’ll attract. But there is one other “hidden” benefit that an outstanding online reputation will bring: pricing power.

How Long Does It Take SEO to Work

Receiving results from SEO takes as long as it takes, but SEO always needs constantly optimizing. SEO Theory explains why and how long SEO takes to kick-in…

People have many questions about how long it takes SEO to work, to recover from penalties, and to see improvements in search results from all sorts of simple tasks. This document combines three articles that were previously published on the SEO Theory blog, as well as some recent updates to the material. This is as thorough an answer as we can provide at this time to the basic question of “how long does SEO take to work?”

How Long Does it Take …?

People ask all sorts of questions about the minutiae of search engine optimization. Unfortunately, the best answer to many of these questions is the rather unsatisfying “It depends …” so let’s take a look at a few of them and see if we can agree on something better than “It depends ….”

2015: How Long Does It Take to Recover from Penguin? – The Penguin algorithm has to process changes in your on-page (keyword stuffing) or backlink data before you will see any effect. You may not see an improvement in traffic if Penguin downgraded your site because of spammy backlinks.
That link value will never help you again but it hurts you until you do something about the link value.
In early 2015 Google revealed that Penguin compares your “good” links to your “bad” links, and if your bad links outweigh your good links you have a Penguin problem. If your good links outweigh your bad links you should have no problem, or at least it’s a mild problem. So the ratio of (Google-designated) spammy links to (Google-designated) natural links determines how much (if at all) the Penguin algorithm affects your site.

How long it takes to recover from Penguin thus depends on how long it takes to change that ratio — and for Google to see and acknowledge the change. Penguin went for a year (from late 2013 to late 2014) without an update while Google rewrote the algorithm. They say it should now be updating on a gradual basis.

You fix a Penguin problem by:

•             Reducing apparent keyword stuffing on your pages
•             Earning a large number of natural links
•             Removing a large number of unnatural links
•             Disavowing a large number of unnatural links

In theory you may only have to do one of the above. In practice, since it is impossible for you to know which links are really hurting you, you may find you have to do more than one of the things on the list above.

2015: How Long Does It Take to Recover from the Panda Algorithm – We have engineered recoveries in about two months’ time for several sites. But how long it takes to recover really depends on how much you are willing to change your site’s presentation. The Google Panda algorithm looks at what you present to the visitor (“user experience”). It does not look at what the user is doing on your pages (“user engagement”).

Google’s Panda algorithm may be able to detect and downgrade poorly written copy that is just a rehash of content written on other Websites. Opinions are divided on this matter. Also, if Google does have an algorithm to evaluate the actual quality of written text, that may be handled separately from Panda.

Time that SEO Really Takes

Getting started is relatively easy, but in order to be successful in an especially competitive environment, you need to dedicate yourself to the strategy. You’ll have to acquire new skills, consult the community with problems you can’t solve on your own, and continually scale up the diversity and intensity of your strategies.

The common solution for this is to simply hire an in-house SEO expert who can handle all these tasks. If you can’t, it’s on you to handle them all yourself. Either way, the cost can be prohibitive, especially if you’re an emerging small business. Likewise, spending all those hours doing it yourself can tie you up, preventing you from pursuing more productive activities that can’t be outsourced.
Before you make a decision, you need to know one thing: how much time does SEO actually take?

The Short Answer

Honestly, the short answer is that it really all depends. Every company has its own distinct needs, with different customers, competitors, and individual sets of goals. If you’re trying to rank highly for hundreds of different keywords against heavy competition, you’ll need to spend far more time than someone who just wants a better chance at ranking locally.

This is the objective truth, but because I know it doesn’t help the average entrepreneur estimate times and costs, I’ll also explore more subjective tools for analysis. Just remember that there is no single answer that will apply to everyone.

The majority of the professionals that will read this article are small- to medium-sized business owners, so most of the analysis will best apply to these types of companies. Also, the time estimates given may vary, depending on the scope and strength of your campaign.

On-Site Optimization: Setup

One of the first things you’ll need to do in an SEO campaign is set your site up properly for SEO. That means possibly:

             Redesigning the site
             Structuring and updating your sitemap
             Offering an intuitive navigation, including microformatting
             Implementing proper title tags and meta tags throughout
             Checking for 404 errors or bad code
             Improving site speed
             Improving security

These are actually only a few of the things you’ll need to do. Listing them all would probably lead to a much longer article. Just know that there’s a massive checklist you’ll need to run through, but you’ll generally only need to do it once. There are a few things you’ll need to check on regularly, which I will address later.

Estimated time: 10 to 40 hours, depending on the size of your site and its current condition. This does not account for design and development time for a brand new site.

On-Site Optimization: Ongoing Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Once your initial setup is complete, the majority of on-site optimization management comes in the form of periodic checkups and adjustments.

For example, once a week or so, you’ll want to log into Google Webmaster Tools to check for any crawl errors or duplicate descriptions that have arisen. You’ll also need to regularly update your sitemap when it changes dramatically. These things don’t take much time, unless a problem emerges that you’ll need to solve.

Estimated Time: About three to 12 hours a week, depending on the size of your site and whether any problems arise.

Content Development

Content development is a tricky area because it’s one of the most fickle. If you’re only writing one post a week, you can get away with spending a couple of hours a week yourself. Trying to make new posts every day in a variety of different formats could easily surpass a full-time job’s requirements all by itself.
